The highly successful relationship between Burnley College and the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has operated for over 20 years, to support a wide range of high-quality university programmes locally.

Our students benefit from this close association which affords them the same status as those studying at the main university campus in Preston. This includes access for Burnley based students to the full resources of the University's main library through the Virtual Academic Library of the North West (VALNOW).

University students at Burnley College enjoy excellent teaching, small class sizes and a high level of personal support from tutors. Close links with one dedicated local university ensures that all of our students enjoy the highest standards and the opportunity to progress to further specialised study at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) if they choose to do so. If you don’t think you are ready to start a degree, we offer Access programmes in a wide range of subjects to help you prepare for University study.

A new college and university campus for Burnley opens in September 2009. The development is the most ambitious of its kind to date in the country, at a total cost of £81m. The campus will be located on the edge of Burnley town centre and easily accessible by bus and rail and from the motorway network. A wide range of full degree and postgraduate programmes will be offered together with state-of-the-art specialist facilities.

After completing her HNC, Grace hopes to progress to a full degree in Engineering with Burnley College’s partner university: UCLan. Grace has enjoyed the challenges that she has been set on the programme and credits her tutors for the support they offer students throughout their time at the College.

In the future, Grace plans to become a Project Engineer or a CNC Programmer.

Toby Morris

Case Study - Toby Morris, HND in Furniture Design and Make

Toby is currently studying for the HND in Furniture Design and Make at Burnley College. He previously completed a Level 2 Furniture Production course at the College. Alongside his studies, Toby works as a truck driver; he has enjoyed his course so far, especially seeing his ideas come to life in the form of finished pieces.

After completing his course he plans to emigrate to New Zealand where he would like to start his own business making bespoke furniture.

Tammy Powell

Case Study - Tammy Powell, Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care

Tammy returned to education after having her two children and enrolled on the College’s Access to Social Work course. She then progressed on to the Foundation Degree in Health and Social Work. She is hoping to top this up to a full degree in conjunction with the College’s partner university: UCLan, when she has completed the second year of her current course.

Tammy found the Access course gave her a good background knowledge of the subject before starting the Foundation Degree and believes the flexibility of teaching at the College has enabled her to balance looking after her children, working part time and studying.
